Abstract

Introduction: Pain in the lower back is one of the most common chronic pain syndromes and is associated with activities in everyday life. Aim: To examine the feelings and the ability to cope in everyday life among people with chronic lumbar syndrome according to the work performed. Methods: This prospective cross-sectional study involved 100 subjects of both sexes, aged 40−65 years, experiencing pain in the lumbosacral spine, with scores ≥5 according to the Numerical Pain Assessment Scale. The respondents were treated at the Special Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in Novi Sad from June to August 2022. They all completed the General and Socio-demographic Questionnaire and the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS). The gathered data was statistically analyzed using SPSS ver. 24 commercial software. Results: Statistically significant differences in the total PCS score were noted with respect to the following variables: strenuousness of the physical work performed (p ˂ .05), timing of back pain manifestation (p ˂0.05), and the frequency of work absences due to back pain (p ˂ .05). Conclusion: The most pronounced negative feelings regarding pain in the lower back are reported by individuals who perform heavy physical work, who feel pain while resting and working, and who are often absent from work.
