Abstract

Introduction: Obesity is a disease characterized by excessive body fat mass to an extent that leads to poor health and a series of complications. The aim was to examine the impact of medical nutrition therapy on obesity, particularly the impact on the abdominal obesity, as well as glycaemia and triglycerides in obese people who have been on medical nutrition therapy for six months. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted as a prospective study on a sample of 84 obese people, of both sexes, aged 40-60 years. Subjects were divided into two groups: the first group (respondents to the medical nutritional therapy -MNT) and second group (control group, patients without medical nutrition therapy). T-test was used to check the statistical significance. Results: The average reduction of obesity level of 5.6 kg / m2 in the first group proved to be statistically significant (t = 13.225, p = 0.000), with an average reduction in waist circumference of 10.15 cm, which is statistically significant (t = 13.932, p = 0.000). In the first group of respondents it has been noted that it is important to regulate blood glucose levels (t = 3.879, p = 0.000). Average reduction in triglycerides from 0.2 mmol/L in the first group, and increase in serum triglycerides by 0.03 mmol/L in the second group, did not prove to be statistically significant.
Discussion with the conclusion: By using medical nutrition therapy the degree of obesity decreased, especially abdominal obesity, which had an indirect positive effect on the regulation of blood glucose values, but it did not influence the decrease of serum triglycerides, as numerous similar studies had confirmed.
